Good digestion is an important part of overall health. The digestive system breaks down food, absorbs nutrients and interacts continuously with the immune system, metabolism and the microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract.

Digestion begins before the intestines

Digestion involves several coordinated stages.

The stomach helps mechanically and chemically process food. Stomach acid contributes to protein digestion and activates digestive enzymes such as pepsin. The acidic environment also acts as an important barrier against many microorganisms entering the digestive tract.

The gut microbiome

The gastrointestinal tract contains a vast community of microorganisms collectively known as the gut microbiome.

These microorganisms interact with components of our diet and produce metabolites that can influence the intestinal environment, metabolism and immune function.

This is one reason digestive health cannot be viewed separately from nutrition. What we eat helps shape the environment in which these microorganisms live.

Fiber feeds the microbiome

Many types of dietary fiber cannot be fully digested by human enzymes. Instead, certain gut microorganisms can use these compounds as substrates.

Different fibers support different microbial communities, which is why fiber diversity can be important. Fermentation of certain fibers produces short-chain fatty acids and other compounds that can contribute to intestinal and metabolic health.

Good sources of diverse dietary fiber include vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, seeds and other plant foods.

A healthy digestive environment is not necessarily built around one “perfect” food.

A varied diet provides different types of fiber and plant compounds, giving different microorganisms access to different nutrients. Polyphenol-rich foods can also interact with the gut microbiome and contribute to a diverse dietary pattern.

The gut does not work in isolation.

Signals travel between the digestive system and the brain through multiple pathways, including the nervous system and chemical signals produced by the gut and its microorganisms. This connection can influence appetite, stress responses and other aspects of physiological regulation.

Regular movement, adequate sleep, stress management and a balanced dietary pattern all contribute to the environment in which digestion and metabolism operate.
