    On 30th August 2026, I will be taking part in a 10K run in Leeds. This is another step in my journey of staying active, challenging myself and supporting better health through movement.

  • Understanding Energy: Calories, Metabolism and Daily Energy Needs

    Calories are a way of measuring the energy contained in food and used by the body. Understanding how energy is obtained, stored and used helps explain body weight, physical performance and everyday energy levels.

    What Are Calories?

    Calories are a measure of the energy provided by food and beverages. The body uses this energy continuously to support essential functions such as breathing, circulation, temperature regulation, movement and tissue repair.

    Energy Balance

    Energy balance describes the relationship between the energy we obtain from food and the energy our body uses. The body constantly adjusts energy use according to movement, daily activity, body temperature and other physiological needs.

    Energy From Food

    Food provides energy through its macronutrients — carbohydrates, proteins and fats. But the body does not treat every calorie in exactly the same way. The way food is processed and used for energy is influenced by digestion, hormones, activity, body composition and metabolic health. Nutrient-dense foods can therefore provide not only energy, but also the nutrients and biological signals needed to support normal metabolism and long-term health.

    How the Body Uses Energy

    The body is constantly producing, storing and using energy. Energy is required for basic functions such as breathing, circulation, maintaining body temperature, repairing tissues and supporting brain activity. Additional energy is used for movement, exercise and the digestion and processing of food. The balance between these processes changes throughout the day according to activity, food intake and the body’s metabolic needs.

    Basal Metabolic Rate

    Basal metabolic rate refers to the energy the body needs to maintain essential functions while at rest. It is influenced by factors such as body size, muscle mass, age and other physiological characteristics. Maintaining healthy muscle mass and regular physical activity can support a healthy metabolic rate.

    Physical Activity and Energy Expenditure

    Physical activity is an important part of daily energy expenditure. This includes not only structured exercise, but also walking, standing, working and other everyday movement. Regular movement can support metabolic health, maintain muscle mass and improve the body’s ability to use energy efficiently.

    Food Quality Matters

    Calories provide energy, but food provides much more than calories. Whole and minimally processed foods can also provide protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and naturally occurring plant compounds. For this reason, a healthy approach to energy balance should consider not only how much we eat, but also the quality and nutritional value of the foods we choose.

    The Bigger Picture

    Healthy energy management is not simply about eating less or counting every calorie. It is about understanding how food quality, energy balance, metabolism, muscle mass, movement and lifestyle work together. A sustainable approach focuses on nourishing the body while supporting healthy metabolic function over the long term.
